SUMMARY: Licensed Behavioral Health Specialist will provide clinical behavioral health services




1. Behavioral Health Specialist will conduct comprehensive clinical assessments using an organization-approved format, and diagnose within their appropriate scope of practice and credentials.

2. Behavioral Health Specialist will develop treatment plans using an organized-approved format for patient in coordination with, but no limited to, the patient, patient’s caregivers, and other members of the patient’s treatment team.

3. Behavioral Health Specialist will coordinate and implement individual, group, and family interventions.

4. Behavioral Health Specialist will utilize organization-approved evidence based practices.

5. Behavioral Health Specialist will function within the ethical guidelines of their credentials, NC General Statutes, NC Administrative Code, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability ACT (HIPAA), US Code of Federal Regulations Title 42 (42CFR), and applicable state laws regarding confidentiality, mandatory reporting, and duty to warn.

6. Behavioral Health Specialist will comply with supervision requirements set forth by their clinical supervisor and follow recommendations.

7. Behavioral Health Specialist will maintain timely documentation regarding patient care and contacts either complying with or exceeding the NC DHHS Service Definition documentation standards, NC DHHS Records Management and Documentation Manual, and in accordance with the organization’s corresponding policies and procedures..

8. Behavioral Health Specialist will actively contribute to the development of a successful therapeutic treatment program in a respectful, professional, culturally sensitive manner towards patients, the community, and colleagues.

9. Behavioral Health Specialist will comply with the NC DHHS Clients Rights Rules in Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services manual and applicable organization and departmental policies and procedures.

10. Behavioral Health Specialist will comply with requests to serve on committees related to the organization’s and/or department’s mission.

11. Behavioral Health Specialist will successfully complete required trainings and maintain and applicable licensure and/or certification requirements needed to successfully perform their required duties.

12. Other duties as assigned.



 QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Employee will be required to successfully meet credentialing requirements at time of hire and every two years thereafter.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited/approved college or university with a Masters degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or other human services field. LCSW or LCAS preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to effectively develop and use handouts visual aids with individuals and groups. Ability to communicate effectively with people from various educational, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Ability to communicate effectively using an interpreter.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply concepts of basis mathematics.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to use sound, ethical, and appropriate clinical judgment and seek clinical supervision and consultation when needed.

1. Understand the definitions and concepts of mental illness, addiction, recovery and co-occurring disorders.

2. Understand that recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.

Recovery means overcoming or managing one’s disease or symptoms. Recovery means having a stable place to live. Recovery means having meaningful daily activities and the resources to participate in them. Recovery means having

networks that provide support, friendship, love and hope.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Provisional or Associate status of one of these. Eligible for licensure within 24 months from date of hire.

 Current CPR certification

 Current NCI A certification

 Valid current NC Drivers License

 Annual Tuberculosis testing


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to operate basic office equipment including but not limited to, copy machine, phone, voicemail, fax machine, computer, mouse, and printer. Proficiency in using word processing and spreadsheet computer software, and internet. Ability to become proficient using electronics health record computer system. Ability to assess and visually present data. Ability to deal effectively with stress and to work under pressure. Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
